{Book Review} Elixir (Red Plague Trilogy Book #1) by Anna Abner

Elixir (Red Plague Trilogy Book #1)
by Anna Abner
Publisher: Mild Red Books
Released:Unknown
Genre:Fiction- YA: post-apocalyptic, zombie,
How I got it: received a copy from the author

The red plague has devastated the human race, turning billions of people into zombies with red eyes and an insatiable hunger for human flesh. The virus sweeps through the population so quickly a possible cure is left to rot. Seventeen-year-old Maya Solomon may be the only survivor who knows where it is. But to reach the lab in Raleigh, North Carolina she will have to outrun the infected boy tracking her every step and cross into a city swarming with monsters.

Review:  I found Elixir to be a riveting read Maya was a bit standoffish at times, but I warmed up to her at the book progressed. While she made some dumb mistakes and took risks, I liked her sense of responsibility and curiosity. I understood her wanting to keep everyone at arms length, but enjoyed watching her open up.
As I read this book I was constantly reminded of 28 Days Later, with the infected. They had the red eyes and were just sick not actually dead. While this is an interesting take, I was conflicted about the idea, since it much easier to justify killing whats already dead. Yet this did offer a good source of conflict for the characters.
The plot moved along well with lots of action a little intrigue and even a tiny bit of romance. I would really have liked to know more about Ben and what his deal was, but I'm guess that cliff hanger will be revealed in book two. I found Pollard to be a bit of a boy scout. Yeah he was a good love interest, but he was a tad stiff for my tastes.
Over all good book and will be on the look out for book two.
