When a deadly virus sweeps the country, Vivian Thomas sets out for California in hopes of seeing the daughter she gave up for adoption. Then her car breaks down and she’s faced with a choice. Give up, or accept a ride from redneck brothers, Angus and Axl. Vivian knows the offer has more to do with her double D’s than kindness, but she’s prepared to do whatever it takes to reach her daughter.

The virus is spreading, and by the time the group makes it to California, most of the population has been wiped out. When the dead start coming back, Vivian and the others realize that no electricity or running water are the least of their concerns. Now Vivian has to figure out how to be a mother under the most frightening circumstances, cope with Angus’s aggressive mood swings, and sort out her growing attraction to his brooding younger brother, Axl.

While searching for a safe place to go, they pick up a pompous billionaire who may be the answer to all their problems. Trusting him means going into the middle of the Mojave Desert and possibly risking their lives, but with the streets overrun and nowhere else to turn, it seems he might be their only chance for survival.

Review: A heartbreaking tale of a mothers love and the fight to survive. Vivian is a stripper who gave up her daughter at sixteen, that was four years ago. Now the world is coming apart and she is traveling a crossed the country to see Emily one last time.  On the way there her car breaks down and she is picked up by redneck brothers Axl and Angus. She knows their type yet can help the attraction she feels for Axl. As they travel their group gets bigger and the dangers get far worst.
Vivian is a fighter she has a horrible past and has manged to squeeze out a living the best way she knew how. With all that gone she decides that she wants to see her daughter Emily that she gave up for adoption four years ago. She wants to make sure the girl is ok and didn't get infected with the virus that is killing people. Enter Angus and Axl two good ole boys, Angus is more interested in Vivian's boobs than actually helping her. Axl is the strong and silent type. Both have baggage and more in common with Vivian than she cares to acknowledge. Axl and Vivian has chemistry but do the whole push and pull dance that drives me up the wall. Axl has mommy issues that he projects on Vivian once Emily is in the picture. I felt bad for Vivian she has no idea how to be a mom, much lest a mom surviving a zombie apocalypse. What happens is heart-wrenching and I almost cried at one point in the book. Both main and secondary characters are very realistic, they hooked me making me actually care about what happened. The end did make me a tad upset as it is one heck of a cliff hanger, but I also look forward to the rest of the story.
Ms Mary did a bang up job creating a world that was horrifying and real. The plot swept me along keeping me on the edge of my seat and tugging at my heartstrings. I think she is definitely an up and coming author to keep an eye on.
