Book Tour: Night Sky Guest post by Jolene Perry

I didn't know that Sky was going to be Native American until I wrote the scene where she met Jameson. I only knew that she had to be opposites of Sarah in almost every way. At first I wanted her to be native to the area, but the more her and Jameson talked, the more I felt like Sky was really out of her comfort zone in a city. Making her a native of Alaska was an easy decision - I have good friends who are Tlingit, and that's where my research came from. It felt almost like cheating when I used a culture I'd grown up around. I love the idea of Sky being part of a group of people who are matrilineal - meaning the moitiie, and clan (all separations within the Tlingit people) were passed through the mom because of situations that arise later on in the book. Also - Tlingit artwork is some of my absolute favorite. And that may be a silly reason for a book that doesn't have pictures, but I see when I write, so I loved it on the selfish end for me. I have such a clear picture of the totems in Sky's room, and have spent enough time in Southeast Alaska - where the Tlingit people are from - to appreciate the detail, color, and meaning in the totems. There are several parks in that area of Alaska with totems that stand as tall as the trees. So, it wasn't a conscious decision to make Sky a native character, but it turned into one of my favorite parts of the story. Thanks so much for having me! ~ Jolene

Night Sky Summary

After losing Sarah, the friend he’s loved, to some other guy, Jameson meets Sky. Her Native American roots, fluid movements, and need for brutal honesty become addictive fast. This is good. Jameson needs distraction – his dad leaves for another woman, his mom’s walking around like a zombie, and Sarah’s new boyfriend can’t keep his hands off of her.

As he spends time with Sky and learns about her village, her totems, and her friends with drums - she's way more than distraction. Jameson's falling for her fast.

But Sky’s need for honesty somehow doesn’t extend to her life story – and Jameson just may need more than his new girl to keep him distracted from the disaster of his senior year.
