How Do I Keep My Writing Different
This is a difficult topic for me. My writing definitely has a style all its own. I’ve been told it’s very gritty and blunt, but tends to flow just right, keeping the reader entranced.
I honestly try and write the way I talk. What good is writing about people if they don’t talk like real human beings? All of my characters have their own personalities, which I have spent months getting perfect, okay, years, but that’s beside the point. I know I don’t enjoy reading a book that you cannot understand, so why would I write one that puts others in the same predicament?
Writing has to be three dimensional. I know I want to see and feel what characters are doing, feeling, seeing, so I have tried to do this with my style. I can say that as a first time author, and this being my debut book, I didn’t get it 100%, but that is what book two is for! (Hint hint)
Let’s take Raven as an example. Not many people will understand what the heck is going on with her at first. She is a Fallen Valkyrie who has had her emotions tortured out of her. Then along comes Duncan and bitch slaps those emotions into focus. How would you act if that happened to you? Like some freaked out over dramatic teenager because you’ve never felt anything like it before. It’s confusing and scary and you might get mad at yourself for feeling what you are feeling. That is what I have done with Raven, making her three dimensional. I have done little things like that through the book with various characters, giving them traits you, as a reader, can relate too.
Not a lot of authors write books that do not have perfect characters. No one is perfect. My characters are far from that. They have faults, some are pudgy, some are short, some have tempers, some are liars, and some are balding. Yeah, I do have some very perfect “looking” characters, but you’ll see their faults soon enough.
I also write about real places. The XIII Hour™ Series and The Garden of Eden™ series (mostly) take place in N’Awlins, my home away from home. People love to know the place they are reading about. I want to immerse my readers into the Cajun world and have them yearning to go to New Orleans and be like “Ohemgee! This is Café de Monde, Duncan’s favorite place to get coffee!”
I can’t thank you enough for letting me take over the blog and blabber about me. I’m not so good at it, but I did have fun!
